At the time when Tractebel started developing the Gangwon Wind Farm project in 2001 there was no legislative framework in place (e.g. no FIT, RPS, etc.) in South Korea. Nevertheless, the company was committed to its partner and was convinced about the project and the government intentions. The present head of the Korea Office was accompanying the whole development from the very beginning: Starting with a feasibility study in 2001 Development activities with design, permitting (2002–2004) Project financing and contracting (Lender: BNP Paribas, EPC: Consortium Vestas-Unison) (2004–2005) Construction management & supervision (2005–2006) Operation monitoring during the initial 5 operation years (2007–2011) Due to our pioneering and continued reliable activity in the Korean wind market, Tractebel is highly honored by the Korean wind market stakeholders with a remarkably high reputation, credibility and a strong market position. In the early days Tractebel also conducted market entry studies and market overview studies to support major Korean companies in finding suitable international engineering partners for their domestic wind turbine development. To date Tractebel has been involved in a majority of the Korean wind projects, either on the developer/owner’s side or on the lender/investor’s side. The experts work on projects from the early development stage (wind measurement, feasibility assessments), through tendering & contracting, due diligence reviews up to construction and operation stages, also advising our Korean clients in overseas projects. Currently the first Korean wind farm repowering projects have also been advised by Tractebel.
