This project aims to enhance the capacities of Nepali institutions, on the implementation of long-term water management strategies at basin and national level, while untapping the country’s hydropower potential. These strategies are drawn following a holistic approach, which considers not only technical and economic aspects but also takes into consideration the environmental and the interest of diverse stakeholders.

This 3-year planning project examines the alternatives for the development of the major basins of Nepal, identifying investment opportunities at the short, medium, and long term. It aims to implement a modern approach to decision making by assessing multiple development scenarios.

Both plans the river basins plan as well as the hydropower master plan are to be prepared incorporating the findings of the strategic environmental and social assessments. The entire project is accompanied by a supporting capacity development programme. The output will be a road map to develop hydropower infrastructure to enhance the country’s power security, while protecting the environment and considering its social implications.

The study covers the main river basins of Nepal, namely Karnali, Gandaki, Koshi, Kankai, Kamala, West Rapti, Babai and Mahakali.
