Renovation of Albert I promenade and Zeeheldenplein

In collaboration with IMDC, Tractebel is working on a series of engineering studies as part of the Geïntegreerd Kustveiligheidsplan (Integrated Coastal Defence Master Plan) for the Flemish Coast.

Alongside the necessary sea defence structures, the redevelopment of the Zeeheldenplein also comes with an architectural aspect. The ‘mandatory’ structures are upgraded in an architectural sense by using these constructions as benches, seating steps, etc. This is why the plans and tender documents were drawn up in close consultation with all of the above disciplines.

The Zeeheldenplein will be approximately 3 times as big. The seaward shape is determined by the edge of the stilling wave basin that sits at a lower level.
The existing storm surge barrier has been demolished. A new sea defence structure was planned on the boundary between the Zeeheldenplein and the footpath alongside the carriageway: this element is designed as a seating element of 40 cm in height and 50 cm in width with localised passageways.
The stilling wave basin is designed in compliance with a number of technical limiting conditions.
The difference in height between the promenade and the square is addressed by three broad seating steps
A specific public space is being put in place between the Zeeheldenplein (higher up) and the lower-lying small beach.
The seating steps between the square and the promenade fold away from the edge and then fold back together running equidistantly with the carriageway.
